Bedbugs are tiny round copper-colored insects that feast on the blood of animals and humans. Once thought to have medicinal properties, bedbugs have been documented as early as the first century. Originating in tropical climates, bedbugs are excellent hitchhikers, stowing away in luggage, books, handbags, or clothes, and can now be found almost everywhere in the world where people live and sleep. Travel is one of the most common sources for new bug infestations in our homes.
Bedbugs were almost wiped out in the United States in the 1940s with the widespread use of DDT on everything from mattresses to floors, but were never completely eradicated. Though they’ve been bothering Americans for years, bedbugs have made a dramatic comeback in the United States. The EPA credits the bedbug resurgence to an increase in domestic and international travel, as well as the bedbugs’ developed resistance to a variety of pesticides.
